The Consulate General of India in New York hosted a reception for Visiting Minister of State for Foreign Affairs and Culture Meenakshi Lekhi on September 8, 2021 for the Indo-American community to meet with her .

A lamp-lighting ceremony took place to make a good start to the meeting attended by Minister Lekhi and Consul General Randhir Jaiswal.

Minister Lekhi was in New York after a diplomatic visit to Colombia in Latin America. While in New York, she attended the United Nations to talk about the issue of peace and peacekeeping. India provides the largest contingent of peacekeepers to the international body.

Addressing those gathered at the reception, Minister Lekhi stressed the need for the United Nations to change over time and thanked the Indo-American community for their commitment to improving their ancestral home.

Minister Lekhi also spoke about the economic progress made in India for the improvement of women, education, housing, infrastructure and sanitation. She called those in the diaspora “ambassadors of India” who could go beyond the official ambassador, to other Americans.

Other speakers included India’s Consul General Jaiswal and India’s new Deputy Consul General Varun Jeph. Other participants included Padma Shri, Dr Sudhir Parikh, president of Parikh Worldwide Media and ITV Gold, actor Anupam Kher, Srujal Parikh, deputy secretary of the Federation of Indian Associations, Dr Avinash Gupta, president of the Association. Deputy Consul General Jeph thanked Minister Lekhi for her inspiring speech which spoke of a “new India” and words of encouragement to the Indo-American community.

He also thanked the leaders and community representatives for attending the event in person as well as coming online virtually. He said he looked forward to getting to know the Native Americans during his tenure in New York.
