San Antonio African American Community Archives and Museum

SAN ANTONIO – This month, the KSAT community is focusing on the local nonprofit, The San Antonio African American Community Archive and Museum (SAAACAM).

SAAACAM’s mission is to collect, preserve and share the cultural heritage of African Americans in the San Antonio area.

“African American history is American history,” said Deborah Omowale Jarmon, CEO / Director of Archives and Museum of the African American Community of San Antonio. Go outside to learn a part of history that is often overlooked or hidden away while having fun. “Most of our events are free. The La Villita exhibition space is free. We are open Thursday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

You can visit SAAACAM throughout the year, but this month in particular you can check out one of these free events listed below.

SAAACAM events:

  • June 5 at 10 am – Oral history and storytelling workshop with Andrea “Vocab” Sanderson at the Cos House in the historic art village of La Villita. REGISTER HERE
  • June 6 at 8 p.m. – Screening of the film Walk on the River at the Arneson River Theater.

  • June 13 at 8 p.m. – Screening of the film Just a Ferry Ride to Freedom at the Arneson River Theater.

  • June 13 at 7 p.m. – 90 minute tour of the Black History River, SAAACAM at La Villita. GET TICKETS HERE
  • June 18 at 7 p.m. – June 16 tour on the Black History River, SAAACAM at La Villita. GET TICKETS HERE
  • June 19 at 3 p.m. – Juneteenth Exhibition at the SA Juneteenth Block Party at the Hays Street Bridge.

  • June 19 – Juneteenth and Baseball Go Together Juneteenth fundraiser with the San Antonio Mission baseball team. Invisible Diamond Exhibit celebrating 100 years of the National Negro League and celebrating MLB’s recognition of local record John “Mule” Miles who played for the Chicago American Giants.   • June 21 to July 30 – Summer day camp at the Ella Austin Community Center.
