The Grand Nisei Week Parade celebrated Japanese and Japanese American culture on Sunday in Little Tokyo – Daily News

The 80th annual Nisei Week Parade on Sunday included taiko drum artists, participants from local community groups and high schools, elected officials and representatives, and the newly crowned 2022 Nisei Week Queen and Court .

The grand marshals included community leader and entrepreneur George K. Sugimoto and Olympic ice dance bronze medalists Alex Shibutani and Maia Shibutani, and honorary grand marshal Kellyn Acosta, soccer player for the Los Angeles Soccer Club.

Nisei Week continues daily in Little Tokyo this week and culminates on August 20-21 with a two-day “Plaza Festival” at the Japanese American Community and Cultural Center.

The Saturday event, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., includes martial arts demonstrations, entertainment, and a mini food festival sponsored by Day-Lee Foods. The center will be open for exhibitions on both days.

During the festival, on Sunday, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., there will be a “Taiko Gathering”, featuring Japanese drumming groups from all over Southern California. The venue for the weekend festival is 244 S. San Pedro St., Los Angeles (jaccc.org/plan-your-visit)

The closing ceremony of Nisei Week and “Ondo Street Dance Party” will take place on August 21 from 4 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on First Street, between Central Avenue and San Pedro Street, in Los Angeles.
