Vienna American Community Celebrates Independence Day – Vindobona.org
The 4th of July is a very special day for every American citizen. Since time immemorial, millions of people have celebrated America’s Independence Day on this date, celebrating its independence from the British crown. In addition to the exuberant celebrations in the United States, the American community in Vienna also celebrates Independence Day.
What is Independence Day?
Independence Day is celebrated annually on the 4th of July and is the national holiday of the United States. It celebrates the ratification of the Declaration of Independence by the United States, which declared itself free from the British Empire with this document.
This came after several freedom movements had already demanded independence from their unwanted colonialists and launched several protests – the Boston Tea Party being the most famous of them.
Although a bitter war raged for several years after the declaration of independence, during which the people of the United States fought for freedom, the 4th of July is celebrated today because on this day, the Continental Congress adopted the final draft of the Declaration of Independence.
Americans in Vienna
But the celebrations go far beyond the borders of the United States. According to the Statistical Yearbook of the City of Vienna, 5,900 native-born Americans currently live in Vienna. The community is well connected in Austria and has many facilities that meet the needs and interests of those who live here.
For example, many US citizens who live and work here are specialists and managers and are supported by the Vienna Business Agency’s “Expat Center”. In addition to free consultations, this also includes support in dealing with the authorities and getting started in everyday life in Vienna.
One in five expats who contact the center are from the United States, making the American community the institution’s largest client group.
Vienna offers Americans a variety of organizations and services: for example, the American International School, the American Chamber of Commerce in Vienna, American football, softball and baseball sports clubs, and the American Women’s Association ( AWA).
Austrian-American friendship tram on the road in Vienna
To illustrate the great relationship between the United States and Austria, an American-style tram has also been running the streets of Vienna since 2020. At the inauguration of the specially designed tram, American politician Mike Pompeo, former American ambassador in Vienna Trevor Traina and the Mayor of Vienna Michael Ludwig came together to celebrate the joint cooperation.
Current US Ambassador Victoria Kennedy is also enthusiastic about the project and praises the great friendship and shared values of the US and Austria.
